Fluorescent lamps are a type of energy-efficient lighting widely used in homes, offices, schools, and commercial buildings. They are known for providing bright, uniform illumination while consuming less electricity compared to traditional incandescent bulbs.

A fluorescent lamp consists of a sealed glass tube filled with a low-pressure mercury vapor and coated on the inside with phosphor. When electrical current passes through the tube, it excites the mercury vapor, producing ultraviolet (UV) light. This UV light then interacts with the phosphor coating, which converts it into visible light. This process allows fluorescent lamps to emit bright light while generating less heat.

Fluorescent lamps come in various shapes and sizes, including straight tubes, circular designs, and compact versions known as compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). They offer a range of color temperatures, from warm white to cool daylight, to suit different lighting needs and preferences.

Compared to incandescent lighting, fluorescent lamps have a longer lifespan and lower energy consumption, making them a cost-effective choice for large spaces and continuous use. However, they require ballasts to regulate the electrical current and can sometimes produce a flickering effect if the ballast is faulty.
